I own a drawer full of good intentions. A pink ribbon pin. Three coloured wristbands. A tote bag with a slogan on it. Every one of them, I bought to help.

And if I'm honest? Not one of them ever helped a living thing.

They helped me — they let me feel like the kind of person who does something. But the animal, the cause, the actual problem? It never felt a thing.

That's the token trap. You buy the symbol of helping, and mistake it for the help.

It's not your fault. It's how most "charity" products are built. The wristband costs pennies to make, a slice of the price maybe trickles somewhere, and you're left wearing a little badge that says "I care" — while the thing you care about carries on exactly as before.

I run SavingTheCats. For years, all I could do was raise awareness — which, it turns out, is its own kind of token. Awareness doesn't fill a bowl. So I partnered with Merrova: the people who physically go out, street by street, and feed stray cats by hand.
